This movement practice is rooted in traditional and contemporary yogic practices (Hatha Yoga, Flow Yoga), in traditional Chinese healing movements, and in contemporary teachings of Somatic Experiencing (as introduced by Thomas Hanna, Peter Levine, Stephen Porges and others). Your facilitator Dr Andrea Boudin is trained in 'Trauma Sensitive' and 'Neurodiversity Affirming' approaches to teaching, meaning that the autonomy, agency and psychological safety of the practitioners is primary during our time together. Everybody in the room is encouraged to practice at their own pace, their own intensity and depth, without interference. In each session a variety of movements are explored (Taoist and Yogic Asana practices: exercises that are designed to strengthen muscles, bones, connective tissues for better physical strength, stamina, flexibility and vitality). We will use contemporary research findings for the more subtle practices (such as breathing, relaxing, meditating), aiming to relieve stress, aches and tension, and to increase body awareness and acceptance.
During the practice we are using soft yoga mats (provided by the Sanctuary but you can bring your own if you prefer). There will be a variety of gentle movements (standing, seated and lying down), and some seated breathing exercises. If you are unsure about the movement practice, please consult first with your professional health care provider.
