An invitation to explore the yogic practices of pranayama (breathing techniques) and mantra meditation, and the different effects they can have on our being.

Drawing on the yogic philosophy of the five koshas (the different layers of our being), we will explore these practices as ways of working with the body, breath, mind and subtle energy.

During this workshop, we will:

  • Explore the role of pranayama and mantra within the yogic tradition and the framework of the five koshas.
  • Prepare the body through a series of simple movements to awaken the spine and joints (Shakti Bandha Asanas).
  • Experience a selection of pranayama practices, including energising, balancing and cooling techniques.
  • Practise mantra meditation, exploring the use of sacred sound to focus the mind and connect with a deeper sense of presence.
  • Leave time for questions, reflection and integration.

What is Pranayama?

Pranayama is the yogic practice of working with the breath and prana, understood in yoga as the vital life force that animates us. It is the fourth of the eight limbs of yoga as outlined in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali's.

Different pranayama techniques have different qualities and purposes. Some are traditionally used to energise, others to cool or balance. Through working with the breath, we explore its relationship with our physical body, energy, mood and state of mind.

What is Mantra?

A mantra is a sacred sound, word or phrase used in meditation and spiritual practices across traditions including Hinduism,Buddhism and Yoga.

In yoga, mantra can be understood as a tool for the mind. Through repetition, sound and vibration, we can quiet the mind, cultivate a certain quality such as compassion and wisdom or connect with the divine within ourselves. Each mantra has its own particular intention and meaning behind it.

In this workshop, we will explore mantra as both a meditative practice and an experience of sound.
