In this workshop, we will explore the practice of Sun Salutations (Sūrya Namaskāra) beyond its physical form. A central part of the Hatha Yoga practice, Sūrya Namaskāra is a practice that connects body, breath, mind and spirit.
Sūrya Namaskāra means “salutations to the sun”. Traditionally, the practice is understood as an expression of gratitude or reverence to the sun, the source of warmth, light and life. On both the micro and macrocosmic levels, the sun represents vitality, clarity and the sustaining energy that supports all living beings.
We will explore the origins of the sequence including the tradition of honouring the sun and learn the twelve postures with attention to alignment, breath, and accessible variations. Practised with awareness, Sun Salutations (Sūrya Namaskāra) can be both an energising and deeply meditative practice.
The workshop will also introduce the energetic and spiritual dimensions of the practice, including awareness of the subtle body and the option of practising with traditional sun mantras.
The session will finish with deep relaxation for integration, with space for questions and shared reflection throughout.
Sun Salutations (Sūrya Namaskāra) : Sūrya Namaskāra consists of a series of 12 physical postures traditionally practiced at dawn and dusk. The postures alternate between forward bends and back bends gently stretching and strengthening the body. Although often practiced as a warm up before moving into other yoga postures,Suya Namaskara is a complete practice in itself.
